Does Your Child Have Dental Anxiety? You Can Help!

children's dentist orangeburg | dentist orangeburg

Did you know that your child should be seeing the dentist every 6 months just like you? Regular dental appointments are important, but what if your child is fearful of the dentist? You may notice that they feel sick or their stomach hurts when it's time for their appointment, or maybe they cry and cling to you when it's their turn to go in. Whatever the signs may be, it's important to build a good relationship with the dentist so your child can have successful visits in the future. Here are three ways you can help ease your child's dental fears.

Give Them Advanced Notice of Their Appointment

Make sure they know they're going to visit the dentist ahead of time. Surprising them may make their anxiety worse, whereas telling them ahead of time allows you to have a dialogue with them about what they're feeling. This also allows you to answer any questions they may have about their dental appointment, which may also help to alleviate their anxiety.

Bring a Toy or Other Distraction

Bringing your child's favorite toy, blanket, or stuffed animal may help them feel more comfortable in the dental chair. Having a comforting item to hug or play with while they wait can help relieve anxiety and fear.

Remain Calm

Whether your child chooses not to speak, or throws a tantrum, try to remain as calm as you can. While this may be challenging, having a calm demeanor will help your child remain calm too.
